On June 22, 1902, the Republic of Colombia was officially devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus amid the turbulent Thousand Days War. Ninety-two years later, in 1994, the Constitutional Court engaged in a dispute to determine the constitutionality of this consecration.
Referring to Colombia as the country of the Sacred Heart now implies characterizing it as a nation plagued by absurd laws, an incompetent bureaucracy, perpetual conflict, and indolent massacres. Gradually resembling Macondo, the iconic image manifests itself in every household or business establishment. The Sacred Heart of Jesus, an omnipresent force that observes everything, remains silent in the face of chaos. Who, then, safeguards us?
